This review is from: The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men (Paperback)
The authors really did their homework. In addition to culling some of the classic recipes of the era ( Lindy's original cheesecake recipe - that alone is easily worth the price of the book), to Chicken Kiev from the Russian Tea Room, to the original Mai Tai cocktail, they have resurrected some of the more nostalgic traditonal cuisine of the sixties, and made the dishes both appetizing and easily reproducible. There are great recipes for holiday entertaining; try the blini and caviar, mango chutney and cream cheese spread, or the jumbo prawn dish - easy and impressive. The pineapple upside down cake was really good (although I couldn't bring myself to use maraschino cherries - updated the cake with macadamia nuts instead). The descriptions of all the old New York great restaurants are wonderful, and the historical tidbits relating the food to the events of the times are fascinating. And the best part is, you can use it to review the past few seasons of Mad Men plot lines while waiting (interminably) for the season premiere in March. Great idea - try out some recipes for the holidays, and then use your favorites to host a Mad Men season opener party!

5.0 out of 5 stars You Don't Even Have to Love the Show....., November 18, 2011
By
glenn rifkin (Acton, MA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men (Paperback)
My memories of the early 1960s are vivid because 10-year olds never forget those transformative moments in their lives. Of course, I will never forget the day JFK was killed. But I also remember the many evenings when my parents would entertain their friends, take dancing lessons in the basement to learn the Cha-Cha, sit around the kitchen table smoking cigarettes, nursing rye and ginger ales and laughing loudly. I'd be in pajamas, sneaking looks from the stairs or the living room, until I got shooed off to bed. The Mad Men series has clearly evoked this time in a powerful way and now, the wonderful cookbook from Peter Zheutlin and Judy Gelman, brings out the details even more vividly. Full disclosure, I don't like the show and have only watched three or four episodes. But I do get the connection to a different era, similar to Revolutionary Road, that has clearly struck a chord among millions of viewers. The cookbook offers a bunch of great recipes, from Old Fashions to canapes, that show up in various episodes. The authors didn't take the easy way out and throw together a few recipes and photos. Instead, Zheutlin and Gelman went on an impressive scavenger hunt to find the wonderful details of where these dishes and drinks originated, who invented them, and how they came to be classics. For Mad Men fans, this is not just a nice memento to accompany the series, it's a fun and well-written read that will add a new layer of pleasure in the watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Find!, December 5, 2011
This review is from: The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men (Paperback)
I went looking for a unique holiday gift and what I found in The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook: Inside the Kitchens, Bars, and Restaurants of Mad Men far exceeded my expectations. From it's slick layout and photos to the painstakingly researched material, the cookbook connects me not only to the Mad Men series, but also to the decade of my youth. The recipes (Jerry's Deviled Eggs, Betty's Swedish Meatballs, Kitty's Pineapple Upside-Down Cake) bring me back to family gatherings and holiday partys. But this is more than just a cookbook. The authors' ability to mix recipes with cultural context makes for a great "period piece cookbook". Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, September 22, 2006
By
This review is from: The Waldorf-Astoria Cookbook (Hardcover)
The Waldorf=Astoria, with three restaurants, has held court to the rich, famous, powerful and tourists with an intense desire for the best prepared and presented food anywhere.

The Waldorf=Astoria Cookbook is a culinary delight and an artistic masterpiece. The cookbook invites everyone to take a tour of the kitchens that boast seven chefs, ten sous-chefs, and 110 cooks, led by Executive Chef John Doherty. We are privy to recipes for 120 dishes (complete with chef notes) from the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Also informational sidebars give the hotel's history, and the photography is stunning.

The Breakfast Lemon Cake might not be everyone's choice, until you gaze upon the scrumptious photograph. It changed my mind. It's one of the recipes immediately marked for future preparation.

I couldn't believe the Raspberry Irish Oatmeal Brulee with Strawberry Coulis. It is to 'die for.'

If you want to impress someone, try out the Parmesan-Crusted Chicken with Asparagus Morel Risotto and Tomato Confit. And while you're at it, make sure to read the Chef's Notes and take advantage of the good advice.

If you're a beef aficionado, the Filet Mignon with Blue Cheese Crust, Bull and Bear Popover, Port Wine Sauce, and Bearnaise will fill the bill.

But my favorites are the desserts. The Chocolate Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce almost made my heart stop. And the Red Velvet Cake will stun you when you check out the ingredients.

Armchair Interviews says: If you love to cook, really cook good food, The Waldorf=Astoria Cookbook is a must have for your cookbook library.

4.0 out of 5 stars FOR EXPERIENCED COOKS, December 18, 2009
By
John (Alexandria, Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Waldorf-Astoria Cookbook (Hardcover)
This review is based on the recipe for Chocolate Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce. If you have ever experienced the marvelous Chocolate Babka from Dean & Deluca, then you already have an idea of what this is like. Extraordinary. But this concoction, to my mind, is even better. It's made with store bought croissants. Its ridiculously simple to throw together. And it is absolutely delicious, with a much more interesting texture than the Dean & Deluca babka (imagine airy, lightly crispy, and custardy all at the same time). And very chocolatey. I did, however, notice what appears to be an editing error in the recipe, which concerns me, and made me wonder how reliable to book will be. Specifically, the recipe directs you to butter a 9-inch baking dish to bake the pudding in. In the next paragraph, inexplicably, the recipe refers to buttered "custard cups". At the end of the recipe, it goes back to talking about "the baking dish". The recipe never actually explains that you can prepare the pudding in one large dish or 6 custard cups. So, ask yourself, would this kind of sloppy editing throw you for a loop, or would you be confident enough to try the recipe anyway? I decided to brave it, and prepared the recipe, and was very glad that I did. Bottom line, I consider this a killer dessert, and will definitely incorporate it into my repertoire. Am very much looking forward to trying other recipes from this book.

In this video clip, Betty demonstrates how to make Classic Waldorf Salad. This salad was originally produced in 1893 at the Waldorf Lodge (later to grow to be the Waldorf-Astoria Resort). The basic principles of this salad ended up apples, celery, and mayonnaise at the beginning. Later, English walnuts have been added, and now there are numerous variations of Waldorf Salad. I include some lemon juice, sugar, salt, and whipped cream for a lovely, luscious salad or dessert. Elements: 2 cups diced red apples (I utilized red delicious apples.) one cup one-inch julienne celery sticks 1/two cup broken English walnuts 1/4 cup mayonnaise one/2 teaspoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon sugar dash of salt one/2 cup whipping cream, whipped Merge, two cups diced apple, 1 cup chopped celery, and one/two cup broken English walnuts in a nice serving bowl. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, mix 1/4 cup mayonnaise, 1/two teaspoon lemon juice, one tablespoon sugar, and a dash of salt. Set aside. Whip 1/2 cup whipping cream. Fold into the mayonnaise mixture. Fold dressing into Waldorf Salad. You may use this as a salad or as a dessert. Just spot a serving in a salad bowl or on a dessert dish. It is pretty, and tasty! I hope you like this a single!
